الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ والصَّلَاةُ والسَّلاَمُ عَلَي سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّد وَعَلَي اَلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ اَجْمَعِيْنَ
(January 16, 2024) We, the Muslim Leaders Working Group, continue to advocate strongly for the well-being of Muslim students in OCDSB schools. Our goal is to help bring meaningful change through engagement and advocacy, Insha Allah.
We thank the OCDSB Equity Team and senior leaders for their willingness to meet with us regularly. We are encouraged by their openness toward listening and learning.
We met with them on Friday, January 12th.
During this meeting, we shared that:
- The current injustice and helplessness makes youth vulnerable, demonstrating understanding and empathy will help.
- We raised concerns that we had received reports that one school was not open to fundraisers for humanitarian relief. The board acknowledged that sometimes, the way that a policy can be interpreted may not reflect the intention of the policy, for example at the start of the year the school decided to hold two fundraisers. The board will be looking at specific situations, but is very much supportive of students humanitarian fundraising for Gaza.
- Anticipating Pride Month early, will things go differently in June? We discussed what approaches will be taken. The school board is very appreciative of ways we can work together. We will be meeting with them next month to look at the current framework they are working with and how we can navigate and work together to avoid difficulties in June.
- We raised concerns about materials that are chosen within classrooms that may perpetuate Islamophobia. We asked how materials are chosen and what is done to reduce potential harm? The board is very aware that some books may create more harm than good, so some work will be done around materials chosen, to emphasize that we all belong.
- We were sorry to hear about two young people falling through the ice during the winter break. The tragedy serves as a reminder that there are many good students, and we suggested that there might be ways to highlight good, upstanding students. We have a tendency to focus on the negatives, let us focus on the positive situations too.
- We raised concerns about oversight in other school boards in Toronto where presenters were asked to report students who were critical of Israel. We reminded the board that in the current climate, bias matters.
Some excellent work is being done by the board’s equity team, Masha Allah. Different schools are being visited that have experienced issues with antisemitism and Islamophobia. Strategies are being shared, healing circles are also being started, although they are still at the brainstorming stage. The board is helping students start up MSAs, and has been supporting schools who do not have Friday prayers yet. Best practices have been shared around student-led Friday prayer.
If your child’s school would like an MSA, or like to start a Friday prayer, parents are encouraged to contact nabil.ahmed@ocdsb.ca, especially if school admins show a resistance to having MSA’s etc.
The board is delighted that NCCM will be facilitating a town hall in schools with large populations of Muslim families.

بيان للجالية المسلمة في أوتاوا من فريق عمل القادة المسلمين
(يناير، 2024) لا يزال “فريق عمل القادة المسلمين” يعمل بقوة للدفاع عن سلامة ومصالح الطلبة المسلمين في مدارس المنطقة التعليمية أوتاوا-كارلتون. نهدف لجلب تغيير ملموس من خلال التواصل والدفاع عن قضايا الطلاب بعون الله.
نتقدم بالشكر لفريق المساواة والمسؤولين بالمجلس التعليمي لمنطقة أوتاوا-كارلتون لرغبتهم في لقائنا بصفة دورية. لقد سرنا انفتاحهم لسماع وجهة نظرنا وتفهمها. التقينا بفريق المساواة في المجلس التعليمي يوم الجمعة الموافق للثاني عشر من يناير الحالي. خلال هذا اللقاء طرحنا هذه النقاط:
أن الظلم الواقع حاليا وحالة اليأس قد تجعل الشباب عرضة لعدم التقبل للاخر، وإن إظهار التفهم والتعاطف سيكون مفيدًا.
أبدينا القلق من التقارير التي ذكرت أن أحد المدارس رفضت جهود جمع التبرعات للإغاثة الإنسانية.المجلس التعليمي أقر بأنه في بعض الأحيان قد يتم فهم السياسات والإجراءات المعتمدة بطريقة لا تعكس المقصود من وضعها، فعلى سبيل المثال قررت المدرسة المذكورة الموافقة على حملتين لجمع التبرعات. المجلس التعليمي سيراجع الحالات المعينة، ولكنه مؤيد بقوة للطلبة الراغبين في جمع تبرعات لغزة.
استباقا لمناسبة شهر “المثلية”: هل ستكون الأمور مختلفة في يونيو من هذا العام؟ المجلس التعليمي يقدر عاليا السبل التي تمكننا من العمل معا. سيكون هناك لقاء في الشهر المقبل للنظر في إطار العمل الذي ينتهجه المجلس التعليمي وكيف يمكن المضي قدما والعمل معا لتفادي الصعوبات في يونيو القادم.
أبدينا قلقنا من استخدام مواد في الفصول الدراسية قد تمجد ظاهرة “الإسلاموفوبيا- الخوف من الإسلام”، وسألنا عن كيفية اختيار المواد التعليمية وعن الجهد المبذول لتقليل الأضرار. المجلس التعليمي لديه قناعة أن بعض المواد قد تسبب ضررا أكبر من النفع المرجو، لذا سيتم بذل جهد في اختيار المواد لتعزيز الشعور لدى الجميع بالانتماء وعدم الإقصاء.
شعرنا بالأسى لسماعنا بغرق شابين هوى بهما الثلج خلال عطلة الشتاء.هذه المأساة ذكرتنا بوجود نماذج مضيئة كثيرة لطلبتنا، وأننا عادةً ما نميل للتركيزعلى الحالات السلبية. والأولى التركيزعلى الحالات الإيجابية وإبرازها.
عبرنا عن قلقنا من وجود رقابة في مجلس تعليمية في مدينة تورنتو حيث تمت المطالبة بالإبلاغ عن الطلبة الذين ينتقدون إسرائيل. ذكرنا المجلس أن الانحياز في ظل الظروف الحالية لجانب الأبرياء أمر إيجابي.
يقوم فريق المساواة بالمجلس التعليمي بعمل متميز إذ يقوم بزيارة المدارس التي وقعت فيها حوادث من معاداة السامية أو الإسلاموفوبيا ويعمل على مشاركة مقاربات واستراتيجيات وعقد حلقات توعية وهي جهود في بدايتها وفي مراحل العصف الذهني.
المجلس التعليمي يشجع الطلبة المسلمين على إنشاء جمعيات للطلبة المسلمين MSA ، ويشجع المدارس على السماح بصلاة الجمعة للطلبة المسلمين داخل المدارس. تمت مشاركة أفضل الممارسات حول صلاة الجمعة التي يقودها الطلاب. إذا كانت مدرسة طفلك ترغب في إنشاء جمعية للطلبة المسلمين بالمدرسة ، أو ترغب في بدء صلاة الجمعة، فإننا نشجع أولياء الأمور على الاتصال بـ nabil.ahmed@ocdsb.ca، خاصة إذا أظهر مديرو المدرسة مقاومة لإنشاء هذه الجمعيات.
