SNMC Heritage: Imam Bukhari–Hadith Sciences, Three Books, and Four Events

Imam Bukhari: Hadith Sciences, Three Books, and Four Events

Three Books Imâm Bukhârî while in Makka in early 20;s wrote a book called, Qadâyâ as-Sahâbah wat-Tâbi`în (Life of Companions of Prophet PBUH and next generation of the companion of Companions). Then he stayed for few years in  Madînah al-Munawwarah to compile the famous book of Asmâ` ar-rijâl (Names of men of transmission) called, Târîkh al-kabîr, And of course, the complied with 7,000 hadiths the most important book after Quran, the Sahi Al-Bukhari. He had an extraordinary memory and extraordinary intellect. He is the inventor of Science of Hadiths

Four Events:

Imâm Bukhârî became blind at a young age. He had recourse to many famous and skilled doctors of his time but their treatments made no difference. His mother was a pious worshipper and a righteous woman. She cried out for help in the court of Allâh the Almighty, for her child and begged for the restoration of his eyesight. At last, “the river of mercy flowed over her,” and Almighty Allâh accepted her invocation. One night, she visited Ibrâhîm `alayhis-salâm in a dream and was told, “Allâh has restored the sight of your son because of your intense and beautiful invocations.” In the morning, as Imâm Bukhârî got up from his bed, glimmers of light reached out into his eyes.

Nîshâpûr and the issue of the creation of the Qur’ân

In 250 AH, Imâm Bukhârî began to deliver lectures on Hadîth in Nîshâpûr. At every session, a huge crowd always packed the area to listen and many included people who had arrived specifically to learn the science of Hadîth. However, some unpleasant people were envious about the reputation and popularity of Imâm Bukhârî.

Once, a man approached Imâm Bukhârî and asked him whether the Qur’ân was created (makhlûq) or not created (ghayr makhlûq). Imâm Bukhârî paused for a while. The man insisted on a reply, upon which he gave a nice reply. After this, mass propaganda started against Imâm Bukhârî, which led to accusations that he believed the words of the Qur’ân to be created. They started warning people by announcing that they should not attend the lectures of Imâm Bukhârî. As a result, people refrained from sitting in his lectures. At last, due to his disappointment, Imâm Bukhârî left the city of Nîshâpûr and returned to Bukhara.1

Banishment from his homeland Bukhara

After returning to He established a school there where he spent a great deal of time teaching with satisfaction.Even here, there were envious people who did not leave him alone. The governor of Bukhara became angry with him for not teaching his sone alone at home and got a fatwa (verdict) from the time-wasting opportunist (ibn al-waqt) `Ulamâ against Imâm Bukhârî to banish him from the city.

His passing: After returning from Bukhara, Imâm Bukhârî decided to travel to Samarqand but the people there had two views about him. So he decided to stay in a village along the way called “Kharteng”. He began to invoke Allâh at length, then he took to his bed and his soul passed away to his Lord – may Allâh have mercy on him. He died on the night of `Îd al-Fitr, the first night of Shawwâl in the year 256 AH. He had reached the age of 62 years,

The Janâzah prayer was performed by Imâm Bukhârî and his body was covered with soil. A beautiful musk smell exuded from the earth of his grave which lasted for several days. People from far and wide began to visit it in astonishment and also took handfuls of earth from his grave for blessings (tabarruk).

In the footsteps of the Prophet (PBUH)

Imâm Bukhârî devoted his entire life, in the search for the way of life given by the Holy Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam, in acting upon his sayings and researching into this science. His each and every action was a fragment of the way of the Messenger. Warrâq stated: “In a dream, I once saw Imâm Bukhârî walking behind the Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam and his feet would fall exactly where the feet of the blessed Prophet had fallen.”

Farbarî stated: “Once in a dream, I met the Holy Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam and he asked me, ‘Where are you going?’ I replied, ‘To Muhammad ibn Ismâ`îl [al-Bukhârî].’ He then said, ‘Go, and give him my salâm.'”

Just as the Holy Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam had happiness with Imâm Bukhârî during his lifetime, he was also pleased with him after his death. Concerning this, `Abd al-Wâhid ibn Âdam Awaysî stated: “I saw the Holy Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam in my sleep standing with a group of his Companions. I asked, ‘O Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam, who are you waiting for?’ He replied, ‘For Bukhârî.’ After a few days I heard the news of Imâm Bukhârî’s passing away. He had died at the very moment that I saw the Prophet sallallâhu `alayhi wa sallam in my dream.”

SNMC Spiritual: Friday Prayer (Jumah Salah) and Parking Issues

Friday Prayer (Jumah Salah) and Parking Issues

In highlighting the importance of Friday (Juma), Allah SWT revealed a surah in the Quran, al-Jumu’ah, the day of Gathering. He shortened 4 Rakah Zuhr salah to 2 Rakah on Friday.

Listening to Jumah Khutbah is part of the prayer. Also, when a person enters for Jumah salah, an angel puts his/her name in a registered book, but as soon as Khateeb starts khutbah, they close the book and start listening.

The City of Ottawa By-Law Officers visited SNMC to educate the congregation on how to park properly around the SNMC masjid on Friday last week. They also issued warning tickets during the last two Fridays. The officers will start issuing parking tickets for offenses violating parking bylaws starting Friday.

Please let us plan for Jumah early and do not get our good deeds reduced by parking improperly blocking neighbors’ driveways or on both sides of narrow streets. Let’s show members of our community that Muslims are polite and courteous.

Imam Zijad’s Corner: PLANNING FOR RAMADAN – 5 WAYS TO PREPARE FOR RAMADAN

PLANNING FOR RAMADAN – 5 WAYS TO PREPARE FOR RAMADAN

Here are the Five Ways to Prepare for Ramadan:

  1. Voluntary Fasts and Moderation in Eating

What better way of preparing ourselves to fast for 29 or 30 consecutive days in Ramadan than to fast the voluntary fasts before the month of Ramadan.

Fasting Monday and Thursday: Abu Hurairah reported that the most the Prophet, (S) would fast would be Monday and Thursday. He was asked about that and he said: “The deeds of people are presented to Allah on every Monday and Thursday. Allah forgives every Muslim except for those who are deserting each other.” He says: “leave them for later”. (Ahmad)

Another is to fast the white days (13, 14 & the 15th of each Islamic month): Abu Tharr Al-Ghefari said: “The Messenger of Allah (S) said “O Abu Tharr! If you fast three days of every month, then fast the 13th, the 14th and the 15th [these are called the al-ayaam al-beedh, the white days]”. (Ahmad, an-Nasa’i & Tirmithi)

  1. Reciting Qur’an

Ramadan was the month in which the Qur’an was first revealed so it is the month of the Qur’an. We should devote much of this blessed month reciting the Qur’an.

Allah the exalted says: “The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was sent down, a guidance for mankind, clear proofs for the guidance, the Criterion; so whoever amongst you witnesses this month, let him fast it.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:185)

We should set ourselves realistic targets for how much we should begin to recite each day for e.g. we will recite 1 or 2 pages a day, half a juz (chapter), or 1 juz etc. We should recite however much we can manage and then build up gradually.

  1. Praying Voluntary (Nafil) prayers

In Ramadan every voluntary prayer carries the reward of a Fard prayer in normal times and there is nothing more rewarding than a Fard prayer so one can imagine the immense rewards that are available in Ramadan for every voluntary prayer we pray.

The Prophet (S) said: “Whoever draws near to Allah during it (Ramadan) with a single characteristic from the characteristics of (voluntary) goodness, he/she is like whoever performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever performs an obligatory act during it, he/she is like whoever performed seventy obligatory acts in other times.” (Ibn Khuzaymah)

  1. Sincere Repentance and Making Du’a

Ramadan is the month where we can gain mercy and forgiveness from Allah for all of our sins past and present. We should know that Allah is most merciful and most forgiving and loves to forgive. Many of us do not spend as much time as we should do in Du’a. Even if we do we rush our Du’a and our hearts and minds are not present whilst supplicating to Allah. Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an: “When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me.”

  1. Controlling the tongue and Improving character & manners:

Ramadan is a time where we must control our desires (nafs) as well as our tongues. Rasulallah (S) said: “Fasting is not (abstaining) from eating and drinking only, but also from vain speech and foul language. If one of you is being cursed or annoyed, he should say: ‘I am fasting, I am fasting.” (Ibn Khuzaimah & Ibn Hibban)

Rasulallah (S) said: “Allah does not need the fast of one who does not abandon false speech or acting according to his false speech.” (Bukhari)

Rasulullah (S) said: “There is none heavier in the scales of the Hereafter than good character.” (Tirmidhi & Abu Dawud).

Weekly Verse

God Almighty describes Ramadan as follows:

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbir (Allahu Akbar; Allah is the Most Great] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.” (Al Baqarah 185)
