Planning for Ramadan: Five Ways to Prepare for Ramadan

A Moment with Our Prophet, Muhammad (S)

By Imam Zijad Delic

Day 203: Planning for Ramadan: Five Ways to Prepare for Ramadan

Narrated by Abu Huraira (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Whoever does not give up false speech and evil deeds while fasting, then Allah is not in need of his/her leaving food and drink.” (Bukhari)

Source: Bukhari

Transliteration: “Man Lam Yada’ Qawlaz Zuri Wal ‘Amala Bihi, Falaysa Lillahi Hajatun Fi An Yada’a Ta’amahu Wa Sharabah.”

In Ramadan, every act carries many folds and that is why we have to prepare for it to achieve Ramada’s full rewards!

There are some acts that carry more weight than others and this post will mention some of them, Insha Allah so that we focus on doing them during these blessed days of Sha’ban and enter the month of Ramadan ready and prepared.

To be prepared for the month of Ramadan, Muslims should practice these voluntary actions before the month of Ramadan so that they get accustomed to these acts so to maximize the high thawab season of Ramadan.

Here are five ways to prepare ourselves for the blessed month of Ramadan, by doing voluntary acts that will strengthen out pursuit and the will to get the best of the opportunities the month of Ramadan offers to us:

  1. Fasting Voluntary Siyam

What better way of preparing ourselves to fast for 29 or 30 consecutive days in Ramadan than to fast the voluntary fasts before it.

Muhammad (S) fasted in the month of Sha’ban and encouraged the companions (r) as narrated by Usamah ibn Zayd (r) that he said: “O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting any month as much as you fast during Sha’ban.” The Prophet (S) said, “It is a month people neglect between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which the deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds and I like for my deeds to be raised while I am fasting.” (Nasa’i)

Imam Al-Nawawi (r) said: “It is part of the Sunnah to fast in the month of Sha’ban.” (al-Majmū’ Sharḥ al-Muhadhab)

The Prophet (S) also fasted and encouraged the companions to fast on Mondays and Thursdays, as narrated by Usamah ibn Zayd (r) that his client said that he went along with Usamah to Wadi al-Qura in pursuit of his camels. Osama ibn Zayd (r) would fast on Monday and Thursday. His client said to him: Why do you fast on Monday and Thursday, while you are an old man? He said: The Prophet of Allah (S) used to fast on Monday and Thursday and when he (S) was asked about it, he (S) said: ‘The deeds/actions of the servants (of Allah) are presented (to Allah) on Monday and Thursday.’” (Abu Dawud)

‘Aisha (r) also narrated that the Prophet (S) was eager to fast on Monday and Thursday.” (Tirmizi)

Our role model, Mostafa (S) also encouraged the companions (r), if they were eager to fast more, to fast the white days (13, 14 & the 15th of each Islamic month). Abu Dharr (r) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (S) said: “O Abu Dharr, if you are going to fast three days of the month, then fast on the 13th, 14th, and 15th days.” (Tirmizi)

  1. Reciting the Qur’an Regularly

Ramadan was the month in which the Qur’an was revealed; it is the month of the Qur’an!

And thus, we should devote much of this blessed month reciting the Qur’an and getting closer to this manual of guidance (hidayah).

Allah, the exalted, says: “The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was sent down, a guidance for mankind, clear proofs for the guidance, the Criterion; so whoever amongst you witnesses this month, let him/her fast it.” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:185)

We should set ourselves realistic targets for how much we should begin to recite each day for e.g. we will recite 1 or 2 pages a day, half a juz (chapter), or 1 juz etc.

At the beginning, we should recite as much as we can manage and then build up gradually.

The best way to develop the habit of recitation in the month of Ramadan is, to do it consistently before the month of Ramadan and when the month of Ramadan starts, the daily recitation of the Qur’an, even if it is a whole Juz’ a day, it will be much more easier and natural.

  1. Praying Voluntary (Nafil) Prayers

In Ramadan every voluntary prayer carries the reward of a Fard prayer in normal times and there is nothing more rewarding than a Fard prayer so one can imagine the immense rewards that are available in Ramadan for every voluntary prayer we pray.

The Prophet (S) said: “Whoever draws near to Allah during it (Ramadan) with a single characteristic from the characteristics of (voluntary) goodness, he/she is like whoever performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever performs an obligatory act during it, he/she is like whoever performed seventy obligatory acts in other times.” (Ibn Khuzaymah, Bayhaqi)

So, to seize the opportunity of Ramadan and its blessings in full, we should do our voluntary prayers more often before the month of Ramadan and when we enter it, regular or extra prayers during this blessed month, will not be a burden but an enjoyable spiritual act.

  1. Repenting Sincerely and Making Du’as Frequently

Ramadan is the month where we can gain mercy and forgiveness from Allah for our mistakes and shortcomings.

We should know that Allah is most merciful and most forgiving and loves to forgive.

Many of us do not spend as much time as we should by doing Istigfar and Du’a.

Even if we do so, we rush our Du’a and often our hearts and minds are not present as we supplicate to Him.

Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an: ” When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me, (tell them of Muhammad (S)) that I am truly near. I respond to the prayer of every supplicant when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Path.’” (Qur’an 2:186)

Thus, we should get into habit of asking from Allah to forgive us and accept our Du’as now so that in Ramadan we continue doing it daily.

One who enters the month of Ramadan and does not get out of Ramadan with the forgiveness of Allah, is indeed in a great loss!

  1. Controlling the Tongue and Improving Character & Manners Consistently

Ramadan is a time of behavioral modification!

It is the time when we must control our whims and desires (nafs) as well as our tongues.

It was narrated by Abu Huraira (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Verily, fasting is not only from eating and drinking. Rather, fasting is from vanity and obscenity. If someone abuses you or acts foolishly against you, then say: Indeed, I am fasting.” (Ibn Hibban)

Abu Huraira (r) also narrated that the Prophet (S) said: “Whoever does not give up false speech and evil deeds while fasting, then Allah is not in need of his/her leaving food and drink.” (Bukhari)

Jabir (r) said: “When you fast, then let your hearing, seeing, and tongue fast as well from falsehood and sins, and avoid harming your servants. Rather, you must have dignity and tranquility on the day of your fasting. Do not make days you do not fast and days you fast as if they were the same.” (Muṣannaf Ibn Abī Shaybah)

Abu Darda (r) narrated that the Prophet (S) said: “Nothing is heavier on the scale of the believer on the Day of Resurrection than good character. Verily, Allah hates the vulgar, obscene person.” (Tirmizi)

These are just several of the voluntary actions that we could do before the month of Ramadan to prepare ourselves for this great month of opportunities.

Some others could be added to the list of good deeds which we could do before the month of Ramadan to prepare ourselves for it, such as being generous and charitable, eating moderately, reviving some Sunan in our lives, etc.

Ya Rabb! Guide us to plan for the month of Ramadan before it starts! Enlighten us with knowledge of what the Prophet (S) and the companions (r) did to prepare and strengthen our resolve to make this Ramadan the best Ramadan in our lives, the lives of our families and the community!

Allahumma Amin!

Founder’s Corner: Far away Aging Parents

Dr Emdad Khan.

We live in a global world. Many of us live in Canada, USA, and other countries.

Many of us have aging mom or dad, relatives and friends living back home or other countries.

We used to go to visit them or in some cases they used to come to visit us.

For multiple reasons, even if we desire, we are not able to be with them.

Even when some of them pass away, we are not able to join in last rites!

But Allah swt has given us several options.

We can pre-fix a day and time in a week, may call them by Viber, whatsapp or Skype or calling card or direct phone.  Some of these technologies give the option of video call.

We may make Dua in our daily prayer.

We can send gifts through other friends or we can send by different postal or courier services or we can send some money.

We should one way or another, keep communication and do what is available and make Dua for everyone.

Also, we may have to make  some sacrifices, either we visit them or invite them to visit us.

May Allah swt keep us safe,  peaceful with tranquility and keep us connected  with parents, relatives and friends.

Founder’s Corner: Listening!

Dr Emdad Khan.

One of the most useful tools  for maintaining excellent communication  and strengthening relationships.

Let us practice  listening more in all of our conversations.

This is the effective way of getting  others good feedback.

To resolve our  day to day life issues, as husband & wife, parent & children and  teacher & student,

we have to adopt  3 Cs: (Communication, Compromise, & Compassion)..

Let us all practice careful Listening,  as part of explicit Communication,

Compromise (give and take) and,

Compassion (we will make mistakes but must forgive each other).

Haya (Bashfulness) is an Indicator of the Level of Our Faith

A Moment with Our Prophet, Muhammad (S)

By Imam Zijad Delic

Day 199: Haya (Bashfulness) is an Indicator of the Level of Our Faith

Narrated by Abu Mas’ud (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Among the words that people obtained from the previous prophets are: ‘If you do not feel any inner feeling of being shy, then do as you wish to do.’”

Source: Bukhari

Transliteration: “Inna Mimma Adrakan Nasu Min Kalamin Nubuwwati, Idha Lam Tastahi, Fasna’ Ma Shi’ta.”

One of the virtues that the humanity is in a dire need today, is Haya!

Our human standards have changed radically in the last 50 years or so.

What was unacceptable yesterday, became very much OK and normal today!

It seems that many have lost the sense of moral conscience, including the people of faith.

My assumption is that due to the loss of Haya, the humanity faces many social challenges that we do not know how to respond to and thus bring ourselves into the state of unhappiness and depression!

Yes, speaking from the faith perspective, Haya is one of the biggest losses we have sustained in the last decades!

What is Haya?

In Islam, Haya means having a sense of bashfulness, modesty or self-respect!

It is the feeling in the heart that keeps its owner away from performing any indecent act.

In the West, it is commonly known as “one’s moral conscience.”

When a person has moral conscience, he/she will care what others think of him/her and will also care what he/she thinks of himself/herself!

And if a person does not have moral conscience, then he/she will do anything he/she pleases and will not care of what others may think about him/her, as the Prophet (S) taught us in the introductory Hadith of this post:

“Among the words that people obtained from the first Prophecy are: ‘If you do not feel any inner feeling of being shy, then do as you wish to do.’” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Muslim scholars have offered different interpretation about this statement ‘if you do not feel any inner feeling of being shy, then do as you wish to do.’

All of the interpretations could be supportive of each other depending on the situation:

  1. a) a warning or the threat of the consequences or a command of a caution – meaning, if you have no Haya, do as you wish but you will be accountable for your choices/actions accordingly,
  2. b) a statement of fact – meaning, if a person does not have Haya, he/she will do whatever he/she wishes and nothing will prevent him/her from doing the act and
  3. c) a display of permissibility – meaning, if one is contemplating to do an act and there is nothing in the act to be ashamed of, then you may do it as you wish.

All prophets before Muhammad (S) have taught their followers about Haya.

As we could understand from the Hadith, the reality of Haya (bashfulness) was known to all Prophets and their followers; however, in Islam, the virtue of Haya has been given the well-deserving place!

It was narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Indeed, every religion has fine and praiseworthy character, and the character of Islam is Haya’ (modesty/bashfulness).” (Ibn Majah)

This Hadith means that among all the religions, which existed before Islam, each religion had one prominent characteristic that defined that religion, except Haya.

In other words, among all the moral values the position that Haya’ occupies in Islam is the most dominant and sublime and this was not the case in the earlier religions so much as it is in Islam.

If it was like stars in other religions, Haya shines forth like the sun in Islam.

For these reasons, the attention of Muslims is invited to this prominent position and importance of Haya.

While Muslims are commanded to adopt all good moral values, they are asked specifically to give a distinct position to Haya in their lives because our Din is characterized by it.

Indeed, Haya rests at the top of the list of good manners of productive and successful believers.

Why Haya is so much important in Islam?

When we read the references of Islam on the topic of Haya, we find out that indeed, Haya is the central virtue in Islam.

  1. Allah loves the virtue of Haya (bashfulness, modesty and self-respect)!

It was narrated by Ashaj ibn Asr (r) that the Prophet told him: “Verily, you have two qualities which are loved by Allah, the Exalted.”

I said, “What are they?” The Prophet (S) said: “Forbearance and Haya.” (Ahmed)

  1. Haya is a branch of Iman!

It was narrated by Abu Huraira (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Faith has sixty to seventy branches, the best of which is to declare there is no God but Allah, the least of which is to remove something harmful from the road, and Haya is a branch of faith.”

  1. It is the essential characteristic of Islam!

It was narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Indeed, every religion has fine and praiseworthy character, and the character of Islam is Haya’ (modesty/bashfulness).” (Ibn Majah)

  1. Haya is an indicator of the level of our faith!

It was narrated by Ibn Umar (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Verily, Haya and faith come together. If one of the two is missing, so is the other.” (Shu’an al Iman)

  1. Haya brings only goodness to its owner!

It was narrated by ‘Imran ibn Husayn (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Haya does not bring anything but goodness.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

…or Haya is all about goodness!…and in another narration, the Prophet (S) said: “Haya is all that is good.” (Muslim)

  1. Haya beautifies everything it touches!

It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “And Haya is not found in anything but that it beautifies it.” (Tirmizi)

  1. It leads its owner into the gardens of Paradise!

It was narrated by Abu Huraira (r) that the Prophet (S) said: “Haya is part of faith and faith is in Paradise.” (Tirmizi)

Ya Rabb! Guide us and our children towards this great virtue so that we be the role-models to others at the time when Haya does not matter much to so many!

Allahumma Amin!

Founder’s Corner: Past, Present, Future!

Dr Emdad Khan.

In Arabic we have past tense, present tense, command form,

The future tense is an extension of present by implied or just adding the letter ‘sa’.

In the Quran, Allah swt has described many stories of past communities, tribes and nations.

For our lessons, He described, creation of human beings, how to spend our day to life, and at the end  He is pleased with us and we are pleased with HIM. He also stated again and again not to be deceived by the life of Duniya and prepare for the eternal life of the hereafter.

He described about seeking His forgiveness when we make mistakes, He asked to own our mistakes and to seek forgiveness from others affected.  That was the example of Prophet Adam AHS and mother Hawa AHS.

Past can not be undone; we need to take lessons and move to the present and from the present think of the future to do better.

We will lose everything in life if we get stuck about the past.

Let us forgive ourselves for our own shortcomings, forgive others, our own parents, our children, our relatives, our community members.

We will feel light, our  burden will go away and  we will move forward.

May Allah swt make our life peaceful with tranquility. Ameen.

With Salaam and Regards Emdad
