SNMC supports people in need after the storm

In the wake of the severe weather and tornadoes that struck the Ottawa-Gatineau region on September 21st, the community is coming together to provide support to those most affected.
United Way is so pleased to welcome the South Nepean Muslim Community, who have generously contributed to help people recover after the storm. The team at United Way is grateful that you have come to the table in this time of need in our city.
What happened?
As many of you know the storms caused significant damage to houses and local hydro grids. Almost all of western and southern Ottawa was without power—170,000 households were affected. Homes were lost, food was spoiled, and communities were forever changed.
In the immediate aftermath, the community responded. We were there for each other. From small moments of kindness to enormous acts of bravery and dedication—we are proud of our city, and our commitment to build (and rebuild) it together.
What’s next?
Within hours of the storm, United Way was in contact with front-line agencies and partners to determine which areas of the city were hardest hit and what their needs were as a result of the destruction.
Now, United Way has joined together with the City of Ottawa, The Salvation Army, the Ottawa Food Bank, the Ottawa Community Foundation, the Ottawa Senators Foundation, Ottawa Community Housing, the Ottawa Community Housing Foundation, and the Champlain Community Support Network, to ensure funds are invested where they are needed most and where they will have the greatest impact. By collaborating with experts, service providers and other funding partners, we will address need such as:
- Food security – we will help food banks and agencies rebuild their stock, so people have fresh, healthy food.
- Support – that those struggling have access to counselling, crisis lines and help navigating vital community services.
- Connection – that vulnerable seniors are safe and supported by their community.
