Benefits of Praying Isha and Fajr in Jamah

“And if they only knew what was in the prayers of ‘Isha’ and Subh [Fajr], they would come to them even if they had to crawl.” [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]

“One who performs `Isha’ prayer in congregation, is as if he has performed Salat for half of the night. And one who performs the Fajr prayer in congregation is as if he has performed Salat the whole night.” [Muslim]

“No Salat is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr (dawn) prayer and the `Isha’ (night) prayer; and if they knew their merits, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so.” [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]

So, If we pray Isha  (8:00 pm at SNMC) in jamah at masjid, we will get ajr as if we are busy with ibadah for half of the night. If we also pray Fajr  (6:30 am at SNMC)in Jamah, we will be counted as if we are busy with ibadah all night.

Heritage and Legacy: Āishah bint Abī Bakr

Āishah bint Abī Bakr (613/614 – 678 CE), the mother of the believers, was one of Muhammad‘s wives.

Aisha had an important role in early Islamic history, both during Muhammad’s life and after his death. In Sunni tradition, Aisha is portrayed as scholarly and inquisitive. She contributed to the spread of Muhammad’s message and served the Muslim community for 44 years after his death. She is also known for narrating 2210 hadiths, not just on matters related to Muhammad’s private life, but also on topics such as inheritancepilgrimage, and eschatology. Her intellect and knowledge in various subjects, including poetry and medicine, were highly praised by early luminaries such as al-Zuhri and her student Urwa ibn al-Zubayr.

Her father, Abu Bakr, became the first caliph to succeed Muhammad, and after two years was succeeded by Umar. During the time of the third caliph Uthman, Aisha had a leading part in the opposition that grew against him, though she did not agree either with those responsible for his assassination nor with the party of Ali.  During the reign of Ali, she wanted to avenge Uthman’s death, which she attempted to do in the Battle of the Camel. She participated in the battle by giving speeches and leading troops on the back of her camel. She ended up losing the battle, but her involvement and determination left a lasting impression. Afterward, she lived quietly in Medina for more than twenty years, took no part in politics, became reconciled to Ali and did not oppose caliph Mu’awiya.

The majority of traditional hadith sources state that Aisha was married to Muhammad at the age of six or seven, but she stayed in her parents’ home until the age of nine, or ten according to Ibn Hisham, when the marriage was consummated with Muhammad, then 53, in Medina. This timeline has been challenged by a number of scholars in modern times.

The Shia have a generally negative view of Aisha. They accuse her of hating Ali and defying him during his caliphate in the Battle of the Camel, when she fought men from Ali’s army in Basra.

SNMC Vision: Youth Identity issues

Youth needs to reconcile 3 identities: national identity as a Canadian citizen, Islamic/Muslim Identity as a value system and a way of life and Ethnic identity such as Pakistani, Indian, Somali, Arab, African, etc.  Yes, we can be all three in a balanced way.

The Canadian charter of rights guarantees us to preserve our Islamic identity.   In Canada, multiculturalism maintains and permits pluralist religious expressions and diversity of cultures. We should integrate with identity, not be in assimilation or isolation or be marginalized.
In assimilation, diverse ethnic groups merge and eventually assimilate, to the adopted country in different degrees, such as New York in America or Toronto in Canada. In marginalization, immigrants become marginal persons, sandwiched between two cultures; the marginal individuals or groups become confused, depressed and marginalized in the society. In isolation, an ethnic group focus on keeping their culture and values in ghetto area and avoid contact with the majority culture. Some Muslims in England live in this way. The new immigrants are likely to maintain a tie to back home by cheap travel, free communication by online tools and feel less pressure to assimilate. In integration, ethnic groups preserve the religious, cultural, and linguistic identities and participate in the adopted country’s culture, language, and political activities

We, the new immigrants in major cities, started interacting with each other at schools, playground, and workplace, hence integrated with mainstream culture but kept strong ethnic and religious identity. To preserve, Islamic identity, Muslims are being active in society in family and social issues, having a voice and organizing events, interacting, discussing and helping by volunteering in school, hospital, library and so on.  Show our positive behavior to our neighbours and work colleagues in action not based on color, ethnicity or languages.
